Program Note

“Third places host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realm of home and work.” —Ray Oldenburg

In the earliest days of the COVID-19 shutdown, I immersed myself in little projects to keep myself occupied, as I believe many of us did. One of those projects was going back and marking down all of the bars and restaurants I had visited in New York City. For some of those places, I had very strong emotional memories of my time spent there. For others, I could only remember small details, like the inside flooring or the furniture on the back patio.

These fifteen miniatures are brief, fleeting representations of my experiences at these place which have been special to me in many ways. I would like to thank Jake Walsh for encouraging me to explore new sounds on the trumpet to help evoke the memories of these “third places.”
